What AMET is
AMET is a maritime university in Chennai, Tamil Nadu: AMET University, a deemed-to-be university on the East Coast Road. It is not a shipping company. Students search “AMET DNS sponsorship” because AMET runs DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science and B.E. Marine Engineering courses, and shipping companies recruit cadets from its campus.

The usual route through AMET
AMET is a university, so the entry step is admission. Sponsorship comes later, from a shipping company, and is a separate decision. The points below follow what the university publishes.
- Admission: AMET shortlists undergraduate applicants on its own entrance test together with Class 12 marks. For B.E. Marine Engineering and B.Sc Nautical Science, its website states that shortlisted candidates must also qualify IMU CET or reach a minimum percentile in a state engineering entrance test.
- Medical: a DG Shipping-approved medical is part of the admission process for the sea-going courses, so eyesight and colour vision are checked before you join.
- Sponsorship: shipping companies run their own selection rounds for cadets studying at AMET, usually on campus. Some students arrive with a sponsorship letter already; most compete for one during the course.
- A degree or DNS from AMET without a sponsoring company still needs a ship. Company selection, not admission, is the step that gets you sea time.

When intakes are announced
AMET admits students on the university academic cycle, and its website carries the current entrance-test announcement. Company recruitment on campus usually happens during the course rather than at admission. Confirm both on the official pages; typically once a year for admission.

1. Check the foundation
Review the current course eligibility, age, PCM and English requirements, then ask whether the route is DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science or another approved programme.
2. Confirm medical readiness
Discuss eyesight, colour vision and other medical questions early. Only an approved medical practitioner can determine fitness for sea service.
3. Apply through the official channel
A typical industry process may begin with an official vacancy or approved recruitment channel. Do not treat a coaching centre, social post or forwarded form as proof of authorisation.
4. Prepare for tests and interviews

Questions students ask about AMET
Is AMET a shipping company or a college?
AMET is a university in Chennai. Shipping companies recruit cadets from it, which is why “AMET sponsorship” is a common search. Admission and sponsorship are two different decisions by two different bodies.
Do I need IMU CET for AMET?
AMET uses its own entrance test, but for B.E. Marine Engineering and B.Sc Nautical Science its website states that IMU CET or a minimum state-entrance percentile is also required. Prepare for IMU CET May 2027 either way.
Does AMET offer DNS?
Yes, AMET lists DNS along with B.Sc Nautical Science, B.E. Marine Engineering and ETO. Confirm the current course list and seats on the university website.
How does sponsorship happen at AMET?
Shipping companies visit the campus and run their own rounds: test, psychometric, interview, medical. A student who clears them is sponsored by that company for sea time.
Can I get a sponsorship letter before joining AMET?
Some companies select Class 12 students first and then place them at a college of the company’s choice. Whether AMET is one of those colleges in a given year depends on the company’s notice.
