DNS Sponsorship: How Shipping Companies Recruit Cadets
For Class 12 PCM students — Physics, Chemistry, Maths · age 17 to 25 (relaxations apply) · girls and boys. Not PCM? This path is not open to you.
DNS sponsorship means a shipping company selects you as its cadet for the Diploma in Nautical Science route and takes you to sea on its ships. Every company runs its own selection. Here is how they recruit, and how to prepare.
The stages most companies use
Psychometric test
A personality and behaviour questionnaire, sometimes with situational judgement questions. There is no cramming for it, but the format should be familiar before the day. NavPath gives psychometric test practice.
Interview
A panel of officers and HR. Expect questions on why the Merchant Navy, basic science, maritime awareness, family support, and how you handle pressure and long months away. Spoken English and calm, structured answers matter as much as marks.
Medical
A full examination by a DG Shipping-approved doctor: eyesight, colour vision, general fitness. Companies may also apply their own standards for their fleet. A strong candidate can still fail here, so screen yourself early.
Documents and terms
Marksheets, IMU CET rank, identity, medical certificate. Read the sponsorship letter: bond period, stipend, training partner, what happens if you fail a stage. Get everything in writing.
What sponsorship is not
It is not an IMU seat and not a job for life. It is a company’s decision to train you as its cadet under its terms. Selection rests with the company.
Typical windows, and how to read a notice
Companies publish cadet intakes when they need cadets. Windows differ by company and by year. Many fall between the IMU CET result in June and the start of the academic session in August; some companies open earlier in the year, and a few recruit from students already admitted to an institute. The only reliable source is each company’s own careers page or its notice through an approved institute.
Read a notice for five things: the legal entity recruiting, the course and institute named, the medical standard, the age limit and the fee or bond terms. Any company or agency recruiting Indian seafarers must hold a Recruitment and Placement Services Licence (RPSL) from the Directorate General of Shipping; the list is on dgshipping.gov.in. If a message says “pay now, papers later” or offers a company name for a fee, it is not a sponsorship notice. Companies recruit on merit through their own process.
Why strong IMU CET students still miss sponsorship
The common gaps are weak spoken English under stress, no practice with company-style questions, poor grooming or punctuality, and a medical surprise found too late. Another is starting interview preparation only after the IMU CET result, when the windows are already open.

Questions families ask
Do I need an agent to get DNS sponsorship?
No. Companies recruit through their own careers pages, approved institutes and their own tests and interviews. Anyone selling a sure sponsorship for a fee is a warning sign. Check any recruiter against the RPSL list on dgshipping.gov.in.
When should I start preparing for the company round?
Alongside IMU CET, not after it. The written test uses the same Physics and Maths; the interview needs months of spoken English practice. At NavPath the company modules run beside the exam coaching from the start.
What does the bond mean?
Most sponsorship letters ask the cadet to serve the company for a set period after training, in return for the training support. Read the period, the stipend and the exit terms before signing, with a parent present.
Can I apply to more than one company?
Yes, unless a signed letter says otherwise. Keep a second plan that does not depend on one employer.
Do companies recruit B.Sc and B.Tech students the same way?
The stages are similar: written test, psychometric test, interview, medical. B.Sc Nautical Science and B.Tech Marine Engineering students are usually recruited as cadets during or after the degree. The company guides linked below describe each company’s usual route.
