Every year families pay an institute or an “agent” that cannot deliver what it sold. Three official lists — DG Shipping approvals, IMU affiliations and the RPSL register — and one rule, never pay for sponsorship, prevent it. Here is how.
Every maritime training institute that runs pre-sea courses in India must be approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. The approved list, with the courses each institute may run and the intake permitted, is on dgshipping.gov.in. If the institute or the specific course is not on it, stop.
DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science and B.Tech Marine Engineering are Indian Maritime University diplomas and degrees. The institute must be an IMU campus or an IMU-affiliated institute for that course. The list is on imu.edu.in. Admission comes through IMU CET and IMU counselling or the institute’s approved process, not through a private sale.
Any company or agency recruiting Indian seafarers must hold a Recruitment and Placement Services Licence (RPSL) issued by DG Shipping. Ask for the RPSL number and check it on dgshipping.gov.in. No RPSL, no cadet berth — whatever the brochure says.
Pay only to the legal entity named on the approval, by bank transfer, against a receipt with the entity’s name and registration. Get the fee schedule, what it includes, the refund policy and the hostel terms in writing before the first payment.
Shipping companies select cadets through their own written tests, interviews and medicals. A company does not sell its sponsorship, and no institute or agent can guarantee one. Anyone who says otherwise is describing something that does not exist.

A seat offered before IMU CET results. A company name offered for a fee. “Pay today, the papers come later.” A hostel or uniform fee demanded before the approval is shown. A refusal to name the legal entity receiving the money. Pressure to decide in a phone call. Any one of these is enough to pause; two together is enough to walk away.
A genuine institute shows its DG Shipping approval and IMU affiliation without being asked, names its fees and refund terms in writing, tells you plainly that admission depends on IMU CET rank and that sea time depends on a company, and welcomes a parent in the room.
Once admitted to an approved course, the institute registers you for the INDOS number and the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) that DG Shipping issues to seafarers. These are official documents, not something an agent can sell separately. Keep every receipt, the admission letter, the approval reference and the sponsorship letter, if any, in one file.
If something goes wrong, DG Shipping publishes grievance routes for seafarers and trainees. Use them. Do not accept advice to stay quiet to protect an opportunity.
