B.Sc Nautical Science is the three-year residential deck degree you enter after IMU CET. It trains you for the bridge and carries the same DG Shipping medical bar as DNS. Below: course, eligibility, colleges and what follows.
B.Sc Nautical Science covers navigation, seamanship, ship stability, cargo operations, meteorology, marine communication and maritime law, with practical training on campus. Students live in, wear uniform and follow a set routine. The degree is awarded by the Indian Maritime University.
You take IMU CET, receive a rank, and choose B.Sc Nautical Science and a campus in IMU counselling. Some approved institutes also run their own entrance test and interview for the same course. NavPath runs college-specific modules for those.
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths; about 60% PCM average (55% for SC/ST); 50% English in Class 10 or 12; age within the published band as on 01 August 2027. Eyesight: 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other without glasses, and normal colour vision on the Ishihara test. Confirm figures in the current IMU information brochure.
IMU campuses and approved maritime institutes offer the course. The lists below name the ones Indian students commonly apply to. Institutes and approvals change every year, so check imu.edu.in and dgshipping.gov.in before you pay any fee.
A degree does not put you on a ship by itself. A shipping company selects you as a deck cadet through its own written test, psychometric test, interview and medical. Some institutes arrange this during the course; in others you apply to companies yourself. Selection rests with the company.
Graduates join a ship as a deck cadet, complete the sea time their certificate needs, then sit the officer certificate exams. From there the ladder runs Third Officer, Second Officer, Chief Officer, Master. The career ladder shows each step.
Both routes lead to the same deck officer ladder. DNS is one year on campus, then sea. B.Sc Nautical Science is three years on campus, then sea. A student who wants a degree in hand first, or more time before company selection, often chooses B.Sc. A student who wants to go to sea early, and is ready for a company round now, often chooses DNS. The medical is identical for both. If your unaided vision is not 6/6 and 6/9, or your colour vision is not normal, neither deck route is open, and B.Tech Marine Engineering is the route to look at. Book the check with a DG Shipping-approved doctor before you commit a year of preparation.

No. IMU campuses and IMU-affiliated approved institutes both offer it. The seat is allotted through IMU counselling or through the institute’s own approved process. Check the institute on imu.edu.in and dgshipping.gov.in.
Not always. Many students are admitted on rank and face company selection during or after the course. Some institutes tie seats to a sponsor. Ask each institute in writing how its current students reach a ship.

Yes. The rules are the same for girls and boys, and the upper age limit for women in the General category is higher. Girls and boys train in the same batch at NavPath.
B.Sc Nautical Science is the deck route: navigation and cargo, leading to Master. B.Tech Marine Engineering is the engine route: machinery, leading to Chief Engineer. The eyesight rules differ, and the work on board is different.
