Merchant Navy mock interview: find out where a company panel would stop you
For Class 12 PCM students — Physics, Chemistry, Maths · age 17 to 25 (relaxations apply) · girls and boys. Not PCM? This path is not open to you.
Every shipping company runs a written test, a psychometric test, an interview and a medical. What each company actually looks for is different — and it is not what most students think. Sit the mock, get your scorecard, then decide.
Sample questions
Eight questions a panel may ask. Try answering them aloud.
They look simple. Each one is asked for a reason, and the reason is what decides the round.
- Why the sea — and not an engineering college on land?
- What does a deck cadet actually do in the first month on board?
- Which Class 12 Physics idea does a ship use every single day? Explain it in plain words.
- Who in your family supports this, and who is worried? What have you told them?
- You make a mistake on watch and nobody has noticed. What do you do?
- Describe a rule you followed even though you disagreed with it.
- In English: what did you do yesterday, in five sentences?
- What is the difference between DNS sponsorship and a B.Sc Nautical Science seat?

How it works
Four steps from this page to a real panel
2. The mock
Fifteen minutes online, on camera, with an actively sailing officer. Five or six questions from the pattern a company panel uses.
3. Your scorecard
Two strengths, two gaps, and the point where a real panel would have stopped you. Written, sent to you and your parent.
4. Counselling
A call with a parent or guardian on the line: the gaps, the programme that closes them, and NEST — our IMU CET model test. Fee concession on merit.

Questions families ask
Is the mock interview free?
Yes. It is an assessment, not a class. It tells you where you stand; the preparation that follows is the course.
Will you tell me the answers after the mock?
No. You get a scorecard — strengths, gaps and where a panel would stop you. Model answers, and the reasons a company asks each question, are taught in the interview-preparation programme.
Do you know the actual questions companies ask?
We know the pattern, because our faculty are actively sailing captains and officers and our modules are curated company by company. We do not publish it, and no institute that does should be trusted with it. Selection rests with the company.
Who conducts the mock?
An actively sailing deck or engine officer from the NavPath faculty. Not a salesperson.
Can my parents sit in?
Not in the mock itself — a panel would not allow it either. Parents join the counselling call that follows, and receive the scorecard.
I am not PCM. Can I still take it?
No. Merchant Navy officer routes need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. This path is not open to you.
