B.Tech Marine Engineering is the four-year engine-room route into the Merchant Navy after IMU CET. Its eyesight rules are less strict, so many students with glasses look at it first. Below: course, eligibility, colleges and what follows.
The course covers marine diesel engines, boilers, electrical systems, refrigeration, naval architecture, workshop practice and engine-room watchkeeping. Students live in and follow a set routine. The degree is awarded by the Indian Maritime University.
You take IMU CET, receive a rank and choose B.Tech Marine Engineering and a campus in IMU counselling. Some approved institutes also hold their own entrance test and interview. NavPath runs college-specific modules for those.
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths; about 60% PCM average (55% for SC/ST); 50% English in Class 10 or 12; age within the published band as on 01 August 2027. During or after the degree, a shipping company selects you as a trainee marine engineer through its own written test, technical interview, psychometric test and medical. Companies look for sound basics in Physics and Maths, clear English and a calm, practical manner. Selection rests with the company.
Graduates join a ship as an engine cadet or trainee marine engineer, complete the required sea time and sit the officer certificate exams. The ladder runs Fourth Engineer, Third Engineer, Second Engineer, Chief Engineer. The career ladder shows each step.
The deck side is about navigation, cargo and the bridge. The engine side is about machinery, maintenance and problem-solving in a hot, loud, well-organised engine room. Students who enjoy Physics, like taking things apart and want to understand how a ship works usually settle on engine. Students who want the bridge, charts and cargo lean toward deck.
Eyesight often decides. The deck routes need 6/6 and 6/9 without glasses; B.Tech Marine Engineering publishes comparatively relaxed rules. If glasses are part of your life, the engine route may be the one your eyes allow. Only a DG Shipping-approved doctor can confirm it, so book the check early.
