Safety at sea is a shared duty of the shipowner, master, crew, training provider and seafarer. This guide shows what to check before joining.

Start with a truthful answer

A ship is a professional workplace with hazards, drills, fatigue, confined spaces and long periods away from home. That does not make a sea-going career unsuitable for women, but it does mean safety should be assessed through systems and written information—not a slogan. Ask who is responsible, how to report a concern and what happens after a report.

What India’s maritime framework covers

DG Shipping explains that India implements the Maritime Labour Convention through the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour) Rules, 2016. The framework addresses seafarer rights and living and working conditions. DG Shipping also publishes grievance-redressal information and describes onboard complaint procedures for seafarers. Read the current material and ask the employer how it applies to the vessel and flag involved.

Questions before accepting a training or job offer

Ask for the vessel or employer identity, flag and contact details; the seafarer employment agreement; safety-management and induction arrangements; emergency contacts; medical support; repatriation terms; accommodation and privacy arrangements; connectivity expectations; leave and sign-off practice; and the onboard and shore-side complaint route. If answers are vague, ask for them in writing before paying or signing.

Handling harassment or a serious grievance

A seafarer should know how to raise a concern with the appropriate onboard officer or master and how to reach an external authority or shore contact. DG Shipping’s grievance page describes prescribed procedures for handling seafarer complaints. Employers should also explain their anti-harassment policy and the complaint mechanism that applies to shipboard work. A candidate should never be told to stay silent to protect a career opportunity.

Personal preparation that helps

Take required safety training seriously, learn the emergency signals and muster arrangements, keep copies of your agreement and emergency contacts, and tell a trusted person your joining and sign-off details. Maintain professional boundaries, report unsafe conduct early and seek medical or shore support when needed. Personal vigilance cannot replace a safe system, adequate staffing or accountable leadership.

Welfare is part of safety

Ask about fatigue management, access to medical care, mental-health support, shore leave where available, communications and how welfare concerns are escalated. DG Shipping lists welfare measures for Indian seafarers, including a maternity benefit scheme with its own eligibility and conditions. Treat the scheme as a specific welfare provision—not as a general promise about every employer or vessel.

Before a girl joins a sea-going programme, the family should be able to name the approved institute, medical route, employer or training path, emergency contact, complaint route and written costs.
