How a Woman Can Join the Merchant Navy in India

Women can pursue deck and engine officer routes, but every step depends on the current IMU, DG Shipping and employer rules.

The short answer

Women can enter Merchant Navy officer pathways in India. The route is not a separate women’s course: start with the course you want, read its current official eligibility page, prepare for the required admission process, complete a medical examination with a DG Shipping-approved examiner where required, and choose only approved training. Seats are allotted by IMU. Selection rests with the company.

1. Decide between deck and engine routes

Deck routes such as B.Sc. Nautical Science and Diploma in Nautical Science lead toward deck-officer training. B.Tech Marine Engineering is an engine-room route. The daily work, eyesight rules, training sequence and competency pathway differ, so do not choose from a social-media description alone. Compare the official IMU course pages and ask a qualified counsellor to explain the work as well as the admission requirements.

2. Check the academic gate before paying anyone

The current IMU course pages for B.Sc. Nautical Science, DNS and B.Tech Marine Engineering describe 10+2 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics requirements, along with course-specific marks and English conditions. These pages are a planning reference for the May 2027 cycle; the IMU 2027-28 prospectus may change dates or wording. Keep your marksheet, subject-wise marks and identity documents ready, and use the official prospectus as the final authority.

3. Treat medical fitness as an early decision

Sea-going programmes have medical and eyesight requirements that are not decided by a coaching centre. DG Shipping publishes the medical standards framework and the Maritime Health Branch publishes approved medical examiner information. Ask about unaided or corrected vision, colour vision and any other course-specific condition before committing to a route. A medical opinion from an unapproved doctor is not a substitute for the required examination.

4. Prepare for admission, then training

Build Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics fundamentals, practise the current IMU CET pattern when the official notification is released, and improve clear communication for interviews. After admission, the approved course and required safety and competency training matter. Check an institute and course against the DG Shipping approval lists rather than relying on an advertisement.

5. Understand employer selection honestly

Some DNS and cadet pathways involve a shipping-company selection or sponsorship process. That is an employer decision, separate from IMU CET. Do not rely on a coaching advertisement, an old list or a paid referral. Verify the employer, recruitment route and any registered placement intermediary through official channels, and ask for written terms before paying.

A May 2027 preparation checklist

• Read the latest IMU prospectus when published. • Select a deck or engine route and record the exact eligibility conditions. • Arrange a preliminary conversation with a DG Shipping-approved medical examiner. • Study with a realistic timetable and timed practice. • Check the institute and course on the DG Shipping approval pages. • Discuss onboard living, leave, welfare and complaint routes with family. • Read the career ladder.
