What after 12th PCM? Five lives the same three subjects open
For Class 12 PCM students — Physics, Chemistry, Maths · age 17 to 25 (relaxations apply) · girls and boys. Not PCM? This path is not open to you.
The same Physics, Chemistry and Maths open several lives: medicine, the armed forces, a science degree, computer science, and the sea. This page puts them side by side, in plain words, so you and your parents can choose with open eyes. It is not a sales page.
The five doors, honestly
Indian Navy and the defence forces
The nation’s service at sea, on land or in the air, with its own selection (NDA, the Naval Academy, SSB interview) and its own discipline. A service life, with postings, rank and pension, not a commercial career. Different exam, different route; some of the same character.
A science degree
B.Sc in Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry stays inside the subject. It leads to research, teaching, data and analysis work, and further degrees. It suits the student who loves the subject more than any one job.
Computer science
Being rebuilt while this batch is still in class. The tools on every phone now write code, and many of the job names will change with them. Good engineers will still be needed; the entry-level rung is the part that is moving. Choose it for the subject, not for a salary table from last year.
The Merchant Navy
Commercial shipping. The goods of the world still move on ships. A company chooses the cadet; the work is a licence, a watch, and responsibility for a ship and the people on it. Instruments will get smarter; the officer still signs for the ship. IMU CET is the exam for this route. It is not a promise of a company, a rank, or a life.
What they share
Every one of these asks for the same three subjects, done properly. Nothing on this page is a way of leaving science. The Merchant Navy is Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry done on a ship.
How to decide, in three questions
One: can you be away from home for months and be fine? If the honest answer is no, the sea and the forces are not for you, and that is a good thing to know at 17. Two: do you want responsibility early? A cadet stands a watch in his first year; most graduates wait years for that. Three: does your eyesight pass? For the deck route it is a hard gate. Check it with an approved doctor before you spend a year preparing — for any route.
If two of the three point to the sea, read the cadet route next and take the free mock interview. If they point elsewhere, go there with our good wishes. A student who chose the sea for the wrong reasons is the one who leaves in the first year, and nobody gains from that.

Questions families ask
Is the Merchant Navy a safe choice with AI changing everything?
Ships will carry smarter instruments every year. A licensed officer still signs for the ship, keeps the watch and answers for the people on board. That responsibility is not being automated; the paperwork around it is.
Can I prepare for IMU CET and JEE at the same time?
Partly — the Physics, Chemistry and Maths overlap. IMU CET adds English, aptitude and general knowledge. Read our IMU CET vs JEE guide before you decide.
Is the Merchant Navy the same as the Indian Navy?
No. The Indian Navy is the armed forces, with its own selection and a service life. The Merchant Navy is commercial shipping: a company employs you, and you hold a licence to work on its ships.
Does NavPath push every student towards the sea?
No. Admission is on merit through NEST and an interview with a parent present, and we turn away students who do not meet the eligibility rules or who want the sea for the wrong reasons. Selection rests with the company.
