DNS and B.Sc Nautical Science need unaided distance vision of 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye — without glasses or contact lenses. If you need lenses to reach 6/6, the deck routes are usually not open to you.
B.Tech Marine Engineering publishes comparatively relaxed eyesight rules, and corrected vision may be acceptable where the prospectus says so. Check the course page on imu.edu.in and ask the approved doctor.
Normal colour vision, tested with Ishihara charts. Colour blindness closes the deck routes; check the engine route’s current rule before assuming either way. Screen yourself early with a proper test, not a phone app.
No morbid condition of either eye likely to worsen or return, good binocular vision, a full field of vision in both eyes, full eye movement and normal pupil reaction to light.
The examiner records height, weight and BMI, checks blood pressure, hearing, heart, lungs, abdomen, limbs and posture, and runs routine tests. A BMI in the healthy range is expected; the figure that counts is the one DG Shipping publishes for that year. A normal BMI on a calculator is not a fitness stamp.
Only a doctor on the DG Shipping list of approved medical examiners. A letter from a family doctor or a government hospital is not accepted. The list is on dgshipping.gov.in.
Medical fitness is checked at admission and again by the sponsoring company, not on exam day. That order catches families out: a student studies for a year, wins a rank, and then learns at the medical that the deck routes are closed. Book a check with an approved doctor before you commit to a route. It is the cheapest test in the whole journey.
Eyesight often decides deck versus engine. If your unaided vision is not 6/6 and 6/9, or the Ishihara test is not clear, ask the doctor about the engine route rather than giving up on the sea. Companies may apply their own standards for their fleet on top of the DG Shipping rules, so read the company’s notice too.
