What Maersk is
Maersk is one of the largest container shipping and logistics companies in the world. Its head office is in Copenhagen, Denmark. The group runs a big fleet of container ships on trade routes across the globe, and its careers pages state that it trains cadets as well as experienced crew for those ships.
For an Indian student, Maersk is one of the best-known names in the deck and engine cadet market. Its ships are large and modern, and most of them carry containers. That shapes the kind of cadet it looks for: someone comfortable in English, disciplined, and able to work in a mixed-nationality crew from the first day.
The usual cadet route into a container line
Most Indian cadets who sail with a global container line reach it through one of three routes. Which route Maersk is using for the current intake is published only on its official careers page.
- DNS sponsorship: you clear IMU CET, join a one-year DNS course at an approved institute, and a sponsoring company agrees to give you the ship time you need after the course. Sponsored cadets follow the same DNS syllabus as everyone else.
- B.Sc Nautical Science: a three-year degree at an IMU campus or an affiliated college. Companies often visit these colleges for campus selection in the second or third year.
- B.Tech Marine Engineering: a four-year degree for the engine side. Engine cadet recruitment follows a similar campus or open-notice route.
- Whatever the route, the sponsoring company’s letter is what gets you on board. A DNS diploma alone does not lead to a ship.
Selection rounds
Typical selection stages at a global container line
The exact order and format are set by the company for each intake. The stages below are the usual industry pattern and are what NavPath coaches you for.
Psychometric test
Personality and behaviour questions. There is no “correct” answer, but there is a consistent one. Contradictions are what get flagged.
Panel interview
Company officers, often including a sailing master or chief engineer, ask about your background, your reasons for going to sea, basic science and your family’s support for the career.
Medical examination
A DG Shipping-approved doctor checks eyesight, colour vision and general fitness. This is a pass-or-fail gate that no coaching can change, so check it early.
When intakes are announced
Large companies usually announce cadet intakes once or twice a year, timed to DNS batches that begin around the start and the middle of the year. Confirm the current dates on Maersk’s careers page. Do not rely on forwarded messages or social posts.

1. Check the foundation
Review the current course eligibility, age, PCM and English requirements, then ask whether the route is DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science or another approved programme.
2. Confirm medical readiness
Discuss eyesight, colour vision and other medical questions early. Only an approved medical practitioner can determine fitness for sea service.
3. Apply through the official channel
A typical industry process may begin with an official vacancy or approved recruitment channel. Do not treat a coaching centre, social post or forwarded form as proof of authorisation.
4. Prepare for tests and interviews

5. Read the selection terms
Before accepting anything, verify the course, fees, training sequence, joining conditions and who makes the sponsorship decision. Keep the written official terms.

- Is the notice current, and does it name the official employer or authorised channel?
- Which course, institute, medical certificate and documents are accepted?
- Are there written terms for training, fees, stipend, joining and shipboard progression?
- Who makes the final sponsorship decision, and how will the result be communicated?

Questions students ask about Maersk
Does Maersk sponsor DNS cadets from India?
Maersk’s careers pages say it trains cadets for its fleet. Whether a DNS sponsorship notice is open to Indian students in a given year is published on that page. Check it before you apply anywhere.
Do I need IMU CET to be considered by Maersk?
For a DNS or B.Sc Nautical Science seat at an IMU-affiliated institute, yes. IMU CET May 2027 is the entry point for the next batches, and most company notices ask for it.
Is there a fee to apply to a Maersk cadet notice?
Established companies do not charge you to consider your application. If someone asks for money to “arrange” sponsorship, stop and verify with the company directly.
What English level does a container line expect from a cadet?
Clear, simple spoken English. You should be able to explain your Class 12 subjects, your reasons for going to sea and a safety instruction in plain words.
Can girls apply for Maersk cadet positions?
