What BSM is
Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) is the ship management arm of the Schulte Group, a German family-owned shipping group. BSM’s head office is in Hamburg. It manages a wide range of ships for owners around the world, including tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers and container ships, and employs a large number of Indian officers.
BSM has a long-standing presence in India, with a crewing and training office in Mumbai and a DG-approved training foundation in Kochi, Kerala. Its published cadet programme recruits from selected, approved maritime academies and supports those cadets through their studies, rather than running its own pre-sea college.
The usual BSM cadet route
Because BSM selects from approved academies rather than running its own DNS college, the order of steps is slightly different from a company with an in-house academy.
- Clear IMU CET and secure a DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science or B.Tech Marine Engineering seat at an institute the company recognises.
- Apply to BSM’s cadet selection when the notice opens, often through the institute itself. Selected cadets are supported by BSM and sail on BSM-managed ships for their sea time.
- BSM has also described a university route where nautical, engineering and electrical students join as designated cadets after their first year. Ask the institute whether it takes part.
- As with every company, the written sponsorship letter is the document that leads to a ship. A college seat on its own does not.

Psychometric assessment
Behaviour and personality questions used to judge fit for a long voyage in a small, multinational crew.
Panel interview
BSM officers ask about your motivation, your family’s view of the career, your science basics and your understanding of a ship manager’s work.
Medical and document check
DG Shipping-approved medical with eyesight and colour-vision standards, then verification of Class 10, Class 12 and identity documents.
When intakes are announced
BSM’s cadet selection usually follows the academic calendar of the academies it works with, so notices tend to appear before DNS and degree batches begin. Typically once or twice a year; confirm on BSM’s official careers page.

1. Check the foundation
Review the current course eligibility, age, PCM and English requirements, then ask whether the route is DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science or another approved programme.
2. Confirm medical readiness
Discuss eyesight, colour vision and other medical questions early. Only an approved medical practitioner can determine fitness for sea service.
3. Apply through the official channel
A typical industry process may begin with an official vacancy or approved recruitment channel. Do not treat a coaching centre, social post or forwarded form as proof of authorisation.
4. Prepare for tests and interviews

Questions students ask about BSM
Does BSM run its own DNS college in India?
No. BSM selects cadets from approved academies and supports them through the course. Its Kochi centre is a DG-approved training foundation for seafarer courses, not a pre-sea college.
Do I need IMU CET for the BSM route?
Yes for a DNS or degree seat at an IMU-affiliated institute, which is where BSM recruits. IMU CET May 2027 is the next public cycle.
Is BSM relevant for Kerala students in particular?
BSM has a training presence in Kochi, but its cadet selection is national. A student from any state applies through the same notice.
What ships would a BSM cadet sail on?
BSM manages tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers, container ships and other types. The company decides where each cadet is posted.
How do I know a BSM cadet notice is real?
It will come from the company’s own domain, name the academy and the selection stages, and will not ask for money. Anything else should be verified with BSM directly.
