Exam pattern — start with the CET rules

IMU CET for undergraduate routes is a timed test taken on a computer. Recent cycles emphasised Mathematics and Physics, with Chemistry, English, general aptitude and general knowledge/awareness completing the paper.

Before you print a 50-page topic dump, write down: total questions, total marks, duration, and whether wrong answers cost marks — all from the official PDF.

Negative marking changes how you practise

If the year uses negative marking, every practice set should too. Learn to skip traps. A blank that protects your score beats a wild guess that sinks a rank band.

Build a personal skip rule in mocks (for example: if two solution paths fail in 60 seconds, flag and move).

Physics — build application, not only memory

Prioritise mechanics, electricity and magnetism, optics, modern physics and waves at the depth Plus Two demands for MCQs. Alternate concept days with mixed numerical sets under a timer.

Keep a formula sheet you rewrite from memory weekly — passive highlighting is not recall.

Mathematics — accuracy under speed

Algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and vectors usually dominate entrance-style papers. Drill standard forms until recognition is automatic, then mix chapters so the CET feels familiar.

Track careless arithmetic separately from concept gaps — the fixes differ.

Chemistry — compact and exact

Physical, organic and inorganic slices should be scheduled in short, frequent blocks. Aim for clean accuracy rather than encyclopedic coverage that steals Maths/Physics hours.

Revisit numerical physical chemistry with the same timer habits you use in Physics.

English, aptitude and awareness

These sections decide close ranks when science scores cluster. Schedule 20–30 minutes most days: comprehension, grammar clean-ups, basic quantitative aptitude, and steady GK/maritime awareness reading.

Do not leave them for the final three days.

Turn the syllabus into a weekly plan

1. List official topics once the brochure is out. 2. Assign weekly hours proportional to weight and to your weakness. 3. Insert one timed mixed set mid-week and one longer mock on the weekend once foundations exist. 4. After every mock, write a three-line list of weak chapters to fix and execute it before adding new material.

Repeaters should audit last year’s paper first — rebuild from evidence.
