Compartment, Improvement or Re-Exam in Class 12? Your IMU CET Eligibility and Merchant Navy Sponsorship, Explained
For Class 12 PCM students — Physics, Chemistry, Maths · age 17 to 25 (relaxations apply) · girls and boys. Not PCM? This path is not open to you.
NavPath is coaching for IMU CET May 2027. Any 2026 dates or results on this page are from the last cycle.

Every year, hundreds of Merchant Navy aspirants in Kerala and across India ask the same anxious question: "I had a compartment, an improvement, or a re-exam in Class 12 — can I still write IMU CET and become a Merchant Navy officer?"
The honest answer: yes for the exam — but sponsorship is a different and much stricter story. This guide explains both, with the exact company-by-company rules, so you can plan with clarity instead of hope.
Quick answer
- IMU CET eligibility (sitting the exam and taking a seat) is generous about re-exams — as long as you clear with the same board and reach the marks.
- Company sponsorship (a shipping firm funding your sea training) is far stricter. Several major companies do not count improvement marks, and some reject candidates who failed a subject.
- IMU CET and sponsorship are two separate rulebooks. Selection rests with the company.
Part 1 — IMU CET eligibility for compartment and improvement candidates
To be eligible for IMU CET, you must have passed 10+2 (Class 12) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as separate, compulsory subjects. Biology in place of Maths does not qualify for the main courses (DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science, B.Tech Marine Engineering).
The core marks:
- PCM 60% or above (SC/ST candidates: 55%).
- English 50% or above in Class 10 or Class 12.
- PCM is calculated the IMU way: each subject is first converted to a percentage, then the three are averaged. There is no rounding — 59.6% is not treated as 60%.
The rules that decide a re-exam case:
- Compartment, supplementary and improvement attempts are accepted — but only with the SAME board. If you switch boards (for example, CBSE to NIOS) to clear or improve a subject, you become ineligible.
- A compartment candidate becomes eligible only after the pending subject is cleared with the same board.
- Timing matters. Your 10+2 must be fully passed before that year's IMU eligibility cut-off. If a subject clears only the following year, you qualify for the following year's IMU CET cycle — not the current one.
- NIOS is accepted only if all subjects are completed through NIOS.
In short: with a compartment or improvement, an IMU CET 2027 seat is realistic once you clear every subject (same board) with 60% or above in PCM. This is the achievable part. If you need to match a full marksheet against thirty situations, use the thirty-case Merchant Navy eligibility check.
Part 2 — Sponsorship: the higher, stricter bar
Sponsorship is a shipping company selecting and funding you for shipboard training after your DNS course. It is separate from — and tougher than — IMU eligibility. The typical base bar is around 60% PCM, 60% English, a good IMU CET rank, and DG Shipping medical fitness (unmarried, valid passport). New to this? Start with our full guide on DNS sponsorship and how to get it.
But here is what most students discover too late: several major companies do not count improvement marks, and some reject anyone who failed a subject. Below are the company norms reported in recent notifications. (Policies change every year — always confirm on the company's current notice.)
Company-by-company summary
| Company | Reported rule (verify on current notice) |
|---|---|
| Fleet Management | 70% PCM and 70% English. Improvement exam results are not considered. No more than a two-year gap between Class 10 and Class 12. Open board, NIOS and distance-learning not eligible. One attempt only. |
| TORM | Improvement candidates not accepted. Candidates who have failed a subject treated as ineligible. |
| Great Eastern Shipping (GESCO / GEIMS) | Degree backlog in an earlier semester not eligible. Class 12 from NIOS not accepted. |
| Anglo-Eastern | 70% PCM as the norm; improvement candidates expected to have 75% PCM. English 60% as a separate subject. |
| MSC | Own cadet notice caps 10+2 entry age at 19 years — a lost year can end the opportunity. |
| Maersk / MSC / Synergy | Base bar around 60% PCM and 60% English; a weaker or repeated record is a shortlisting disadvantage even where it is not a hard bar. |
| Seven Islands (SIMTI) | Improvement/compartment must be from the same board. NIOS not eligible. Age limit around 20. |
| SCI, Wallem, V.Ships, Bernhard Schulte, Scorpio | No publicly stated bar found. Do not read that as open — they still prefer first-attempt, no-backlog, higher-marks candidates. Verify each current-year notice. |
Companies that explicitly screen out these candidates
Fleet Management — one of the strictest for re-exam cases:
- 70% PCM and 70% English required.
- Improvement exam results are not considered.
- No more than a two-year gap between the year of passing Class 10 and Class 12 — a subject deferred to the next year usually breaks this rule.
- Candidates who have appeared once for Fleet's exam cannot reapply.
- Open board, NIOS and distance-learning candidates are not eligible.
TORM — improvement candidates are not accepted, and candidates who have failed a subject are treated as ineligible.
Great Eastern Shipping (GESCO / GEIMS) — candidates who cleared a degree final year but still carry a backlog in an earlier semester are not eligible, and a Class 12 result from NIOS is not accepted.
Anglo-Eastern — 70% PCM as the norm, and improvement candidates are expected to have 75% in PCM; English must be 60% as a separate subject.
Companies with tight rules that quietly disqualify re-exam cases
MSC — its own cadet notice caps the 10+2 entry age at 19 years, so a single lost year can end the opportunity.
Maersk / MSC / Synergy — base bar around 60% PCM and 60% English; seats are highly competitive, so a weaker or repeated record is a shortlisting disadvantage even where it is not a hard bar.
Seven Islands (SIMTI) — improvement/compartment must be from the same board, NIOS is not eligible, and the age limit is around 20.
Companies where we could not confirm an explicit bar
For SCI, Wallem, V.Ships, Bernhard Schulte and Scorpio, we could not find a publicly stated bar on improvement or compartment candidates. Do not read that as "open." In a competitive selection they still prefer first-attempt, no-backlog, higher-marks candidates — verify each on its current-year notice.
The pattern to understand
Even beyond a written "no improvement" clause, three things quietly work against a re-exam candidate at almost every serious company:
- Low age caps (often 19–20 for the strictest firms) — a lost year can shut the door.
- First-attempt preference — in a crowded shortlist, a clean record wins.
- No multi-session or changed boards — NIOS-in-parts and board switches are widely rejected.
Part 3 — What this means for you (an honest plan)
- If you have a compartment or improvement, an IMU CET seat is realistic once you clear all subjects (same board) with 60% or above in PCM.
- Premier company sponsorship becomes difficult if your record shows a failed subject or improvement marks. Plan for this rather than being caught out at the interview stage.
- Strong routes that do not depend on company sponsorship:
- B.Tech Marine Engineering — you earn the degree, then seek employment (no sponsorship gate).
- A non-sponsored or self-arranged DNS seat.
- GP Rating as an alternative entry into the Merchant Navy.
- Best strategy: aim for a clean, strong first attempt. If you must re-take, target the highest possible marks — and keep a close eye on your age.

Frequently asked questions
Can compartment students apply for IMU CET?
Yes — once the pending subject is cleared with the same board and the PCM average reaches 60% (55% for SC/ST), a former compartment candidate is eligible. If the subject clears only the next year, you qualify for the next IMU CET cycle.
Do shipping companies accept improvement marks for sponsorship?
Many major companies do not. Fleet Management states improvement results are not considered; Anglo-Eastern expects improvement candidates to have 75% in PCM; TORM does not accept improvement candidates at all. Always check each company's current notice.
Which companies do not accept improvement or compartment candidates?
Based on recent notifications: Fleet Management (improvement not considered), TORM (improvement and failed-subject candidates ineligible), Great Eastern Shipping (backlog candidates not eligible), and Anglo-Eastern (improvement candidates need 75% PCM). Rules change yearly.
Can I join the Merchant Navy if I failed a subject in Class 12?
For IMU CET, yes — once you clear it with the same board and meet the marks. For sponsorship, a failed subject can be a hard disqualifier at strict companies (for example, TORM), so plan for non-sponsored routes such as B.Tech Marine Engineering as a backup.
Does IMU CET accept NIOS students?
Yes, if all subjects are completed through NIOS (not across multiple boards). However, several sponsorship companies (Fleet, Great Eastern, Seven Islands and others) do not accept NIOS candidates — so choose your target companies carefully.
What is the age limit for DNS sponsorship?
It varies by company and is often tighter than the IMU limit — many strict firms want candidates 20 years or under (some 19), while others allow up to 24–25. A year lost to re-exams can close the window, so age is a real planning factor.
