Merchant Navy Eligibility, Case by Case: Are You Eligible for IMU CET 2027?
For Class 12 PCM students — Physics, Chemistry, Maths · age 17 to 25 (relaxations apply) · girls and boys. Not PCM? This path is not open to you.

Most students asking about Merchant Navy eligibility do not need a list of rules. They need one answer about their own marksheet: am I in, or am I out?
That answer is rarely simple. A student with 59.8% in PCM is not eligible. A student who cleared one paper through the wrong board is permanently ineligible, and nobody told them. A student with 52% who assumed the career was closed actually has a real maritime route open. Every year, students lose a full year — sometimes an entire career — because nobody explained the rule in plain language, early enough.
So this page is built differently. It sets out the four gates, then gives you thirty numbered cases. Find the one that matches your situation, read across, and you will know exactly where you stand for IMU CET 2027 and for the seagoing courses.
Merchant Navy eligibility is not a matter of opinion, and it is not negotiable by any institute. Every line here traces to its source: the Indian Maritime University Prospectus 2026-27, or the Directorate General of Shipping entry standards. Where a rule closes a door, we say so. Where a door is open that most people miss, we say that too.
The short answer
To be eligible for the seagoing courses through IMU CET, you need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as separate subjects in Class 12 plus English, an average of 60% in PCM (55% for SC/ST), 50% in English in either Class 10 or Class 12, a minimum age of 17 as on 1 August of the course-start year, a DG Shipping medical fitness certificate with normal colour vision, and unmarried status. Fail any one of those and the seagoing courses are closed, however strong you are elsewhere. Non-PCM and non-medical maritime routes still exist — see Case A7.

How to use this page

Part 1 — The four gates
Every candidate passes through all four. Fail any one, and the seagoing courses are closed regardless of how strong you are elsewhere.
Gate 1 — Subjects
Class 12 must carry Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as separate subjects, plus English. Biology in place of Mathematics does not qualify.
Gate 2 — Marks
- PCM average minimum 60% — General, OBC (NCL) and EWS
- PCM average minimum 55% — SC / ST only (5% relaxation)
- English minimum 50% — in Class 10 or Class 12, whichever is higher
- No relaxation on English for any category — one narrow exception, see Case F1
- No rounding off. 59.8% is not 60%.
That 60% is a Government of India requirement, not a college rule. It is the DG Shipping minimum entry standard for every approved deck and engine pre-sea course in India. No institute, no sponsor and no management quota can lower it.

Gate 3 — Age
Reference date is 1 August of the year the course begins, not today. Minimum age 17.

Gate 4 — Medical and status
- Medically fit to DG Shipping standards, certified by a DGS-approved doctor — required for DNS, B.Sc (Nautical Science) and B.Tech (Marine Engineering)
- Normal colour vision, tested by Ishihara chart
- Unmarried — mandatory for DNS, B.Sc (Nautical Science) and B.Tech (Marine Engineering)
- Passport strongly recommended; the name must match your Class 10 certificate
Get the DGS medical done before you pay anyone. Fees are not refunded if you are later rejected on medical grounds.

Group B — You are re-taking an exam
The governing rule, in one line: compartment and improvement candidates are eligible, provided they reappear with the SAME board. Mixing boards, or using NIOS Transfer of Credit, closes the IMU route. A completely fresh Class 12 — all five subjects, one board, no marks carried forward — is a new qualification and is open at IMU (Cases B6 and B8), with a sponsorship gap.

How the BBA aggregate is worked out: English marks plus your major subject marks. Other languages are excluded. Admission is by counselling on Class 12 marks.
One structural point that decides your path. DNS seats at IMU's affiliated institutes are open only to candidates sponsored by a ship-owning or ship-managing company. Without sponsorship, a DNS seat has to come through an IMU campus via IMU's own online counselling. Know this before you plan.

Part 4 — Points of no return
Read this section twice. Each of these is permanent, or costs a full year.
1. Never mix boards to clear or improve a subject. Moving from your board to NIOS to fix one or some papers creates a mixed-board record. IMU disqualifies any Class 12 result that combines marks from more than one board. That cannot be reversed. Sitting a completely fresh Class 12 — all five subjects — through a single alternate board as a new candidate, with no marks carried forward, is a new qualification and is IMU-eligible (Case B6). It costs a year, and the sponsorship gate is severely impaired.
2. Never use NIOS Transfer of Credit (TOC) to improve marks. TOC imports passing marks from the original board. The resulting marksheet carries two boards. Case B7. Permanent.
3. Improvement and compartment must be with the SAME board. An improvement attempt through any other board creates a mixed-board record and closes the IMU CET route.
4. Do not let your clearing exam fall after the CET date. If your qualifying exam is written after that year's CET, you cannot register for that CET at all. A supplementary sitting in June or July puts you into the next cycle. March is the deadline that matters.
5. Get the DGS medical before you pay any fee, anywhere. Colour blindness and uncorrected vision end a seagoing career at the medical, not at the application. No fee is refunded for medical ineligibility.
6. Watch the age clock, especially against sponsors. IMU's limit is generous. Several shipping companies are far tighter. One repeated year can close doors that no later marks will reopen.
7. Fill the application form once, correctly. A submitted application cannot be corrected. A mistake in your name, date of birth or marks means applying afresh with a new email address and mobile number, and paying again.
8. Rounding does not exist. 59.8% is a fail. Calculate your PCM average honestly, subject by subject, before you plan anything.

Part 5 — The second gate nobody warns you about
Clearing IMU CET and meeting IMU's eligibility gets you a rank and a seat. It does not get you sponsorship — a shipping company funding your shipboard training. These are two separate rulebooks, and the company rulebook is stricter.
What that means in practice
- The typical company bar sits above IMU's — commonly 60% to 70% in PCM and in English, with a strong CET rank
- Several major companies do not count improvement marks at all. Others require a materially higher PCM from improvement candidates
- Some treat a failed subject as a disqualifier, even after it has been cleared
- Company age caps are often far tighter than IMU's — in some cases 19 or 20 years
- Some companies limit the gap between passing Class 10 and Class 12, which a repeated year can breach
- Several do not accept NIOS, open board or distance-mode candidates
- Most prefer a clean first attempt when shortlisting, even where no written bar exists
Every one of these varies by company and changes every recruitment cycle. Nothing here is a rule about any named company. Selection rests with the company. Routes that do not depend on company sponsorship at all
- B.Tech (Marine Engineering) — you earn the degree, then seek employment
- B.Tech (NAOE) and (NASB) — shore-based naval architecture and shipbuilding
- BBA (Maritime Logistics) and (Logistics, Retailing & E-Commerce) — maritime business careers
- A DNS seat at an IMU campus, through IMU's own counselling
If your record carries a failed subject or improvement marks, plan for these from day one rather than discovering the position at an interview.
Part 6 — What to do next
- Calculate your PCM honestly. Each subject converted to a percentage, then the three averaged. No rounding.
- Find your case above. Note the case number.
- Book your DGS medical if you are heading for a seagoing course — before any fee is paid anywhere.
- Bring your marksheets to us for a straight review. We will tell you which cycle you fit, which courses are genuinely open, and where sponsorship is realistic. If a door is closed, we will say so on day one, not in month six.
- Verify anything that affects your own case at source. IMU takes admission correspondence by email only. Keep the reply.

Frequently asked questions
Am I eligible for Merchant Navy with 55% in PCM?
For General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates, no — the seagoing courses need 60% PCM, and there is no rounding. SC and ST candidates are eligible at 55% under the 5% relaxation. If you are General with 55%, an improvement attempt with the same board is the only route into the PCM courses; BBA (Maritime Logistics) remains open without PCM. See Cases A2, A3 and A7.
Can I join the Merchant Navy if I took Biology instead of Maths?
Not for DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science or any B.Tech route — Mathematics is compulsory as a separate subject. BBA (Maritime Logistics) accepts any stream with 50% aggregate. See Case A6.
Is a compartment or supplementary candidate eligible for IMU CET?
Yes, provided you cleared the pending subject with the same board and your PCM then reaches 60%. You apply as a Compartmental Candidate with no disadvantage at IMU level. Company sponsorship is a separate and stricter question — see Part 5. Case B1.
Do improvement marks count for IMU CET 2027?
At IMU, yes — an improvement attempt with the same board that takes you to 60% PCM makes you eligible as an Improvement Candidate. Several shipping companies, however, either do not count improvement marks or demand a materially higher PCM from improvement candidates. Case B2.
Can NIOS or open-school students join the Merchant Navy?
This is the most misunderstood rule of all. NIOS Transfer of Credit (carrying marks from another board) is a mixed-board record and is closed — Case B7. Repeating all five subjects through NIOS as a fresh candidate, with no TOC, is open at IMU with a sponsorship warning — Case B8. Mixing boards to fix one paper remains the most expensive mistake in Kerala.
What is the age limit for IMU CET 2027?
Minimum 17, calculated as on 1 August of the course-start year. Maximum is 25 for General males and 27 for General females and transgender candidates, 28 and 30 for OBC (NCL), and 30 and 32 for SC/ST. Company age caps are frequently much tighter — sometimes 19 or 20.
Can I join the Merchant Navy if I am colour blind or wear glasses?
Normal colour vision tested by Ishihara chart is a safety standard for all DGS seagoing courses, and there is no appeal. Distance vision must meet the required standard. Get the DGS medical done before paying any fee anywhere — fees are not refunded for medical ineligibility. Shore-based routes (B.Tech NAOE, NASB, BBA) need only a Registered Medical Practitioner's fitness certificate. Case E2.
Can married candidates apply for DNS or B.Sc Nautical Science?
No — unmarried status is mandatory for DNS, B.Sc (Nautical Science) and B.Tech (Marine Engineering). B.Tech NAOE, NASB and the BBA programmes carry no marital-status bar. Case E1.
Can I do the Merchant Navy after B.Sc or engineering?
Yes. A B.Sc in Physics, Maths, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as an individual subject opens DNS at 55% in the final year; a B.E or B.Tech from an IIT or AICTE-recognised college opens DNS at 50%. Both need 50% English. A three-year engineering diploma opens lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech Marine Engineering. Group D, and read Part 5 — the age clock and the sponsorship gate both still apply.
Is a maritime career possible without PCM or without IMU CET?
Yes. BBA (Maritime Logistics) and BBA (Logistics, Retailing & E-Commerce) require 50% aggregate in any stream plus 50% English, need no PCM and no IMU CET, and are offered at IMU Kochi, Chennai and Vizag and at the College of Ship Technology, Palakkad. Maritime Logistics carries an apprenticeship with a stipend. Case A7.
Does clearing IMU CET bring sponsorship or a job with it?
No. IMU CET gives you a rank, and the rank decides your seat. Sponsorship is a separate decision made by individual shipping companies against their own, stricter criteria, which change every recruitment cycle. NavPath trains students for that stage with company-specific exam and interview modules and question banks.
Should I repeat a year for IMU CET 2027?
If your PCM already clears 60% and you missed on rank alone, a focused repeat year is usually the strongest decision you can make — most repeaters fail the first attempt on preparation, not ability. If your PCM is short, the sequence matters: fix the marks with the same board first, because no CET score compensates for an eligibility failure. If a repeated year would breach a company's age cap or its Class 10-to-12 gap rule, weigh the non-sponsorship routes in Part 5 before committing.
